Il Panforte
Panforte is a typical dessert of the Sienese gastronomic tradition, perhaps the best known of the spiced breads in Siena and can be enjoyed all year round, but it arrives on Italian tables during the Christmas holidays. The ancient origin of this delicious dessert traces it back to the Middle Ages, the Sienese tradition has it that the first panforte was made by a nun (Berta). There are two versions of this excellent dessert, that of the margherita panforte, created in honor of Queen Margherita of Savoy who visited Siena in 1879 and the gingerbread, a spicier version that includes a mixture enriched with cocoa powder, candied melon and pepper.
